The short version. Quill & Compass is not on sale yet. Right now it is a free founder beta: nothing is charged, no card is taken, and there is nothing to buy.
When it does go on sale, the Game Master buys it once — £29, no subscription — and everyone at their table plays free. The first 200 founders keep it free, forever.
Your characters, campaigns and notes are yours. We claim no ownership of them and we will not train anything on them. If you want out, you take your data and go.
Who these terms are with
Quill & Compass ("we", "us") is an independent software project run by one developer in the United Kingdom. By using this website or the app, you agree to what is written here. If you do not agree, please do not use them.

What state the product is in, stated plainly
Quill & Compass is pre-release software in an open founder beta. That is not a disclaimer hidden in the small print; it is the actual situation, and you should read it before you run a real campaign on it.
- Features will change, move, and occasionally be removed.
- Things will break. Some of them will break during a session.
- Data loss is possible. Keep your own notes for anything you would be upset to lose.
- There is no guaranteed uptime, and no support hours. There is a person who reads their email.
We are not hiding behind that. If something breaks, tell us and we will fix it — that is the entire point of the founder programme.
Price, and the founder promise
Today nothing is for sale. There is no checkout on this site, we take no payment details, and joining the founder beta costs nothing.
When Quill & Compass goes on sale, the intended model is:
- The Game Master buys once — £29, a one-time purchase, not a subscription.
- Players are free. They join from a browser with no purchase and no download.
- The first 200 founders keep it free, forever. If you are one of the first 200 people to join the founder beta, you will never be charged for Quill & Compass itself — not at £29, not at any price, not for an upgrade, and not for a later version. This promise is binding on us, it is the whole reason the number is capped, and if the project is ever sold or handed on it goes with it.
- The one boundary, said plainly so it is not a surprise later. If we ever build something that costs real money every month to run for you — hosting your maps on our servers, say, or an AI service we pay for by the request — that would be a separate, optional thing you could ignore. The app you have stays free, complete, and yours. We are not going to hollow out the free version and sell the bits back.
- How the 200 is counted: by the order addresses reach the founder list, one place per person. If we ever get the count wrong, we will honour the promise rather than argue about it.
Prices for everyone after the first 200 may change before launch. We will not change the price of something you have already bought.
Your licence to use the app
Once you have founder access or have bought a licence, we grant you a personal, worldwide, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use Quill & Compass for as long as these terms are kept. One licence covers one Game Master, on their own devices, running as many campaigns and tables as they like.
You may not: resell, rent, sub-licence or share your licence; remove or obscure any notices in the software; or attempt to defeat the licensing itself. Reverse-engineering is permitted only where the law says it cannot be excluded.
We keep ownership of the software, its name, its artwork and its code. You keep ownership of everything you make with it.
Your content is yours
Your characters, campaigns, maps, journals and notes belong to you. We claim no rights over them beyond the bare permission needed to store them, sync them to the players you invite, and show them back to you.
- We do not use your content to train AI models — ours or anybody else's.
- We do not read your campaigns for any purpose of our own, and we never sell or share them. If you report a problem, we may have to look at the specific thing you are reporting in order to fix it — only that, only while we are fixing it, and only because you asked.
- You can ask for a copy of everything, or ask us to erase it. See the privacy page.
You are responsible for what you put in. Do not upload anything you have no right to use, and remember that anything you share into a campaign is visible to the people you invited to it.
Accounts and fair use
You need an account to use the app, you must be 13 or over, and the details you give must be true. If you are under 18, get a parent or guardian's permission first — and they should be the one buying anything. Keep your password to yourself; you are responsible for what happens under your account.
Do not use Quill & Compass to break the law, to harass anybody, to host material you have no right to, or to attack the service — scraping it, overloading it, or trying to reach data that is not yours. We may suspend or close an account that does. If we ever do that to you, we will tell you why.
Security research is welcome and is not covered by that. If you are looking for weaknesses in good faith, stay off other people's data, do not degrade the service for anyone else, and tell us privately first at hello@thequillandcompass.com. Do that and we will not come after you — we will thank you, and credit you if you want it.
The free tools on this website
The generators at /tools are free, need no account, and run entirely in your browser. Whatever they produce is yours to use in your own games, commercial or otherwise, with no attribution required and no limit on how many times you press the button.
Third-party rights
Quill & Compass is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Wizards of the Coast or any other rights-holder. Any trademarks named on this site belong to their owners and are used only to describe compatibility.
What we promise, and what we cannot
We will do our honest best to keep Quill & Compass working and your data safe. If you have paid for it, the law already requires it to be of satisfactory quality, fit for its purpose and as described, and we are not trying to duck that. What we do not promise, on top of those rights, is that it will be uninterrupted or entirely free of bugs — no software is, and this one is in beta.
We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, for lost profits, or for data you did not keep a copy of. Where we are liable, our total liability to you is limited to the amount you have actually paid us in the twelve months before the claim — which, during the founder beta, is nothing.
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes: liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence; liability for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; or any right you have as a consumer under UK law that cannot be excluded by agreement. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights — including those under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 — stand whatever this page says.
Ending it
You can stop using Quill & Compass at any time, and ask us to delete your account and data. We may end your licence if you seriously break these terms, and we will tell you why first unless the law prevents us.
If we ever shut the service down, we will give you reasonable notice and a way to export your campaigns before it goes.
Changes to these terms
We will only change these terms for a real reason: a change in the law, a change in what the software actually does, a security or fraud problem, or a change of provider behind the scenes. We will not change them simply because we would prefer different terms.
The date at the top changes whenever they do. For a change that materially affects you, we will tell you by email before it takes effect — not by quietly editing the page — and you can reject it by closing your account, which costs you nothing. If you have paid and a change you reject leaves you materially worse off, you get a refund of what you paid.
We will never change these terms to take away the founder promise or a licence you have already bought.
Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer living elsewhere in the UK or in the EU, this does not take away the protection of the mandatory laws of the country you live in, or your right to bring a claim there.
Before any of that: write to hello@thequillandcompass.com. Most things are a misunderstanding and a reply away. We do not use an alternative dispute resolution scheme, so if we cannot settle it between us, the courts above are the route.
