Quill & Compass

For Game Masters whose Sigil tables are closing

A Sigil alternative, honestly described.

Wizards of the Coast has said Sigil’s servers shut down at the end of October 2026, and that content made in Sigil will no longer be accessible. If you need somewhere to take your table, this page says what Quill & Compass is, what it is not, and what it cannot carry over.

It is 2D, not 3D. You can’t buy it yet. Players can already join free from a web browser; the Game Master’s desktop app is bought once and opens to buyers soon. No date promised.

What carries over, and what doesn’t

The short version: your players and your own notes can come with you. Your Sigil scenes can’t, and the look is different. Wizards of the Coast called Sigil “a powerful 3D virtual tabletop”; Quill & Compass is a 2D table.

An honest ledger, kept in candlelight.
What we’re comparing Quill & Compass Sigil
The look 2D: top-down tactical maps with fog of war. 3D, as Wizards of the Coast describes it.
Your existing Sigil content We cannot import it. Maps and scenes would be rebuilt here. Wizards of the Coast says it will no longer be accessible once the servers shut down at the end of October 2026.
Your players They come with you. They join free from a web browser, with a free account: no download. Your campaigns run as usual until the end of October 2026.
Your own notes Anything you kept outside Sigil can be written into the campaign journal. Nothing in the announcement offers a way to export what you built.
Paying for it The Game Master buys once, no subscription: £29 for the first 200 Game Masters, £39 after. Players never pay. Not applicable to a closing product.
Can you start today? Players can. The Game Master’s licence is not on sale yet, and we are not promising a date. Until the end of October 2026.

If three dimensions were the reason you loved Sigil, Quill & Compass is not a like-for-like replacement, and we would rather you heard that here than discovered it in session one.

What you would be moving to

Players join from a browser

Send an invite link. Your players make a free account and sit down at the table from a web browser: the battle map, fog of war, their character, and real-time rolls. Nothing for them to install or buy.

Bought once, with a way out

The Game Master pays once and there is no subscription. And because a closing service is exactly what you are living through, your campaign can be exported in full whenever you like. No small project can promise to last for ever; what it can do is let you take your world with you.

Remembers every session

A quiet archivist keeps every note, NPC and half-forgotten promise, then hands it back the moment you need it. Rebuilding a campaign is easier when the app keeps hold of the threads while you do.

Characters from D&D Beyond

If your players’ characters live on D&D Beyond, they can be imported in minutes. That covers characters only, not Sigil scenes or maps.

AI does the chores, humans do the magic — and we refuse to use AI for art.

No AI image generators, ever. The maps and items are drawn by code, from rules and a style I designed. The illustrations, icons and logo are made by people.

Questions a Sigil Game Master might ask

When does Sigil close?

According to Wizards of the Coast’s announcement, you can keep running your campaigns as usual until the end of October 2026. At the end of October 2026, Sigil’s servers shut down and content created within Sigil will no longer be accessible.

Can I import my Sigil maps and campaigns into Quill & Compass?

No. We cannot import Sigil content, and Wizards of the Coast’s announcement says content created within Sigil will no longer be accessible once the servers shut down. What carries over is your table: your players, and whatever you kept in your own notes. The maps and scenes themselves would have to be rebuilt.

Is Quill & Compass a 3D virtual tabletop like Sigil?

No. Wizards of the Coast described Sigil as a 3D virtual tabletop. Quill & Compass is 2D: top-down tactical maps with fog of war, tokens, initiative and a campaign journal. If 3D scenery was the reason you loved Sigil, we are not a like-for-like replacement and we would rather say so now.

Can I buy Quill & Compass before Sigil closes?

Not yet. Licences are not on sale today and we are not promising a date. Leave your email and you will be told the moment they open. Players can already start free in the browser with a free account.

What does it cost?

The Game Master buys once, with no subscription: £29 for the first 200 Game Masters, £39 after that. Players never pay; they join free from a web browser.

Does Quill & Compass use AI?

Yes, and I’d rather tell you exactly where. I’m one developer, and I use AI tools to help me write the app’s code. Inside the app, optional AI helpers take on prep admin: tidying and recapping your session notes, finding the NPCs and places in what you wrote, and drafting a shop, NPC, room, encounter or treasure for you to change as you like. They run on your own PC; if you add your own key for Google Gemini, OpenAI or OpenRouter, they use that service instead. They never write your plot, never roll a die and never run the game, and no generative AI made any of the app’s images or artwork. The battle maps are drawn by rules I wrote: the same seed gives the same map every time. The point is simple: less bookkeeping, a smoother setup, more time for the game.
